The Secret of the King’s Lost Coin

Join Max and Mia as they uncover the mystery of the King’s Lost Coin. Following clues left behind by children across 800 years of Ringwood history, you’ll explore the town centre, solve puzzles, complete activities, and discover fascinating stories about Ringwood’s famous market.

Trail Information

Starting point:
Flag pole outside The Gateway , Ringwood (what3words: keeps.vibrate.outermost)
Time needed:
Around 60-90 minutes depending on how long you spend completing the challenges and activities.
The route:
This circular walking trail takes participants around Ringwood town centre, visiting local landmarks. The route follows pavements and public town centre spaces. Please take care around roads, vehicles and other pedestrians.

About the Story

Max and Mia’s family has lived in Ringwood for generations. When their Grandad reveals the secret of a lost gold coin dating back to 1226 and the signing of Ringwood’s Market Charter by King Henry III, the children set off to uncover the truth. Along the way, they discover diary entries, letters and clues passed secretly between children for eight centuries. Their investigation reveals stories of medieval markets, historic inns, Monmouth House, the church, the old mill and the people who helped protect the King’s Lost Coin through the ages.
Families will enjoy a series of interactive activities including:

• Solving codes
• Spotting historic features
• Drawing activities
• Word puzzles
• Finding the final hidden treasure

All while learning about 800 years of Ringwood Market history.

Background

This Story Trail was created to celebrate 800 years of Ringwood Market. It was written and illustrated by Daisy Kate and developed with support from:

• Culture in Common
• Ringwood Town Council
• The Ringwood Society

Pupils from Ringwood CofE Infant School and Poulner Junior School helped develop the story.

The trail combines storytelling, local heritage, walking and creative activities to encourage families to explore Ringwood and discover the rich history of one of England’s oldest markets. Using the story to guide you, can you complete the challenges and help solve the mystery? Don’t forget to bring a pencil!
