Creative Sessions for those living with Dementia

About the event

Creative Taster Sessions for those living with Dementia and their carers @SpudWORKS

The Living Room Dementia workshops are a series of 3 week-long programmes of creative activity for people living with dementia, their carers and older people dealing with loneliness in the new Living Room space at spudWORKS. Each week will include 6 half-day sessions, with a variety of creative and movement-based activities.

Our whole approach to this programme is to ensure that carers and participants feel confident and comfortable in taking what they have learnt back to their homes. Physical activities are as important as the arts. We want them to develop good habits that are gentle and achievable. We also want to re-ignite people’s love for a range of activities – reminding them of things that they have perhaps forgotten. Rediscovering skills they had along with a renewed and healthy love of movement.

We will do this by:

• Leading them through simple movement activities at the start of sessions to develop good habits

• Ensuring they are taking suitable and accessible activities back to their homes

• Developing new arts and crafts skills that can be repeated with minimal materials and equipment at home

• Building confidence to take part in future workshops and to consider looking at other opportunities in the community

• Building self-esteem and empowerment – encouraged to do more/take part in other things and groups

• Building new connections and the wider community that they can be part of – especially for the carers

Working with individuals to help ensure both males and females living with dementia feel welcome and encouraged to attend the workshops. Typically, husbands caring for a wife with dementia are less likely to reach out for such opportunities.

We have been developing activities with people living with dementia, their carers and older people dealing with loneliness for several years now. We have been learning from this experience and developing our workshops to suit. Throughout this time we have worked alongside and listened to families, care home providers, Admiral Nurses, Care Navigators and others to ensure that we are delivering an effective, appropriate and sensitive programme.

Sessions are free for participants to attend. Sessions run from 10.30 am – 12.00 or 2 pm – 3.30 pm. Refreshments provided!
