Barney Norris: Write Your Family History

How would you tell the story of your life?

More and more people are writing their memoirs; creating a story of their lives that they can share with children and grandchildren, ensuring the adventures of a lifetime remain part of their family for generations to come. Award-winning writer Barney Norris, a lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Oxford, was first spurred into writing by just such a collection of memoirs his grandparents wrote and shared with him, documenting the journey his family had been on, the lives which had led to his.

In this workshop, he’ll share a range of tools and tricks to kickstart your own life story – helping participants to identify how they would like to tell the stories of their lives, what they’re proudest of, what they’ve learned, what they would love to share with others and how to get that down on paper in a way that is moving, captivating and truthful.

This event is part of local community-led literature festival Play on Words, which returns this autumn from 21st October to 4th November with events across the New Forest. Founded by two friends in New Milton in 2018, Play on Words returns for its fourth year with a wide range of events for readers and writers in New Milton and for the first time expanding to Lymington and Totton.
