About the event

Professional cartoonists take over Hythe!

Watch as cartoonists create giant cartoons before your very eyes on Hythe’s promenade. Wander the High Street and take in the cartoon gallery in the shop windows. Get a caricature or cartoon drawn to take away.

Some of the best cartoonists from across the UK are coming to Hythe on Saturday 8 July 2023 to launch the Waterside Arts Festival. Head to Hythe Village Centre to enjoy this family-friendly day of interactive cartooning activities.

All members of the Cartoonists’ Club of Great Britain, the visiting cartoonists are:

Richard Skipworth

Rich has been a freelance cartoonist and illustrator for over 30 years. Most of his work has been in the greeting card, calendar and giftware market, and there’s a very, very good chance his cartoons have kept you company when you’ve celebrated a birthday or Christmas. In recent years Rich has found a tremendous following worldwide with his greyhound-themed cartoons.

Tim Harries

Based in Wales, Tim is a highly adaptable and extremely gifted cartoonist who has produced cartoons, comic strips and humorous illustrations for the likes of Readers Digest UK and USA, Saga, New Statesman, The Phoenix, Punch, Private Eye, The Sun, The Star, Kodak, Nelson Thornes, Oxford University Press, Scania and many more.

Sue Burleigh

Dorset’s Sue Burleigh draws under the name of ‘Ticklywitch’. She’s a gagcartoonist but also does book illustration, greetings cards  and sartoons on canvas that she exhibits. Her ‘Holy Order’ series of cheeky monks and nuns sold in Abbeys and Cathedrals throughout the UK. Sue’s art style has been compared to Beryl Cook with a dark side!

Chris Williams

Chris creates his cartoons as ‘Dink’ and hails from Liverpool. He’s been published in Private Eye, The Guardian, Penguin Books, and the international press. He’s also a member of the Professional Cartoonists Organisation and The Association Of Illustrators.

Achaz von Hardenberg

Achaz is a German cartoonist who grew up in Italy and currently I lives and works in the UK. His cartoons have been published in the UK (The Guardian, Private Eye, The Critic, The Oldie), in Ireland (The Phoenix) and in the US (Alta). He signs his cartoons as ‘Hard’.

Rich Nairn

After a decade of working in real jobs, Rich took the inky plunge and embarked on a career as a full-time cartoonist and caricaturist. These days you’ll find Rich at events across the UK, drawing caricatures or in his Doodle Cave creating cartoons and books full of weird and wonderful characters.

Ian Ellery

Ian has been a full-time professional cartoonist and Illustrator for over 30 years and is a previous Chairman of the Cartoonists’s Club of Great Britain. He specialises in character design, cartoon illustration and caricatures, with a highly adaptable style that has graced a mind-boggling number of greetings cards and books.

His cartoon clients include Twinings, Longleat, TGI Fridays, Bella Italia, Carluccios, Eurotunnel, Great Western, Gleneagles, Rainforest Cafe, and, locally, Longdown Activity Farm.
